In the Spotlight

Jo Ann Weatherwax, Vice President of the Florida Dental Hygiene Association, has received the prestigious "Efficiency in the Workplace Leadership Award".

This award is an annual award of One Voice for Volusia. One Voice for Volusia coordinates a coalition to mobilize sectors of the community to strengthen the community's organized capacity to meet human needs.

Jo Ann was given this award December 15, 2010.

Jo Ann has a long and rich history of service to the community and her professional association. Jo Ann has actively been involved in the dental field since she was 16. In 1997 she accepted a part time position with the Osceola County Health Department while she was attending Valencia Community College to become a dental hygienist. After graduation, she remained with the Osceola County Health Department, working as a clinical hygienist and accepting many administrative responsibilities.

Jo Ann furthered her dental education after graduation from Valencia Community College by attaining her Bachelor's degree in Dental Hygiene Education from the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC).

In 2008 the Volusia County Health Department hired JoAnn for the position of Dental Program Director for their new county health department dental clinic. Since that time she has overseen the opening of a second clinic in Deland (2010) and is excited to oversee a third project to bring preventive oral health care to children through a School Based Dental Sealant Program in 2011.

Jo Ann has been actively engaged in pursuing her Master's degree in Dental Hygiene Education which she will complete in 2011.

Jo Ann is a member of the Greater Orlando Dental Hygiene Association where she has held numerous leadership positions.
